Working of Digital Radio

The basic operation of digital radio is similar to the analog radio; it sends a signal in the air, which is captured by the receiver and is played on the speakers. However, the factor which differentiates one from the other is that unlike the analog radio, the digital radio does not sendthe entire information at once. The audio is compressed and then is transmitted in pieces.On receiving the audio pieces, the receiver decodes them and pieces them groups them together before playing them. While this may look like a complex process, it is beneficial as the signals are broadcasted in a redundant manner for improving the playback. The signals in digital radio are better than in analog due to two reasons:

  • The amplifiers befitted in the receivers filter out the competing signals.
  • Since the information is supplied redundantly, in the scenario of bit loss, the receiver often formulates a back-up process by playing the redundant signal.

Since there is no such thing devoid of drawbacks, digital radio also has some drawbacks. Firstly, it can’t travel long distances as the analog signal and secondly, the lag that arises due to the transmission of signal in pieces and then their reconstruction before playing.

When Will Analog Radio Cease?

Whilst there is no surety when the analog radios will become extinct, apart from Norway, there are chances that the transition from the analog to digital will not be a smooth one, like in the case of televisions. Instead we will get to witness a sporadic deployment of the change, whilst we will be enjoying the trustworthy analog signals.

Even though numerous countries are doing experiments with digital radio, many have not made assured plans to replace the analog ones.Countries like China, Australia, France, Denmark, South Africa, Belgium and the UK are some where you can get to enjoy digital radio.
